On May 13, 2012 Lee County celebrates its 125th anniversary; on the very same day the ex-USS Mohawk (WPG-78) will be sailing away from Key West to its new home in Lee County to begin its transformation to serve its final duty as a veteran’s memorial reef.
Commissioned in 1935, the Mohawk was assigned to the North Atlantic escort operations, she launched a total of 14 attacks against submarine contacts between the 27th of August 1942 and 8th of April 1945, she is the last remaining ship of the Battle of the Atlantic.
By using the Mohawk as a veteran’s memorial we are able to prevent a piece of our national history from being turned into scrap, all while providing a public service in an economically positive way.
